How Long Does Water Damage Restoration Take?

Most water damage restorations take 3–5 days to dry, plus 1–3 weeks of reconstruction. Here's the full timeline.

Water damage restoration happens in two phases: mitigation (stopping the damage and drying the structure) and reconstruction (rebuilding what was removed). Most homeowners are surprised at how fast the first phase happens — and how long the second phase can take.

Day 0 (first 4 hours): Emergency response

A pro arrives, identifies the source, stops the water, and begins extraction with industrial vacuums. Most of the standing water is gone by the end of day one.

Days 1–5: Drying

Commercial air movers and dehumidifiers run continuously. Technicians return daily with moisture meters to check progress. Most jobs are dry in 3–5 days; deeper penetration into concrete or hardwood can take 7+.

Day 5–7: Final inspection & antimicrobial treatment

Once moisture readings are back to normal, equipment is removed and any wet areas are treated with antimicrobials to prevent mold.

Week 2–4+: Reconstruction

Drywall replacement, flooring installation, baseboard, paint. Timeline depends entirely on scope and the contractor's schedule. A single bathroom can be rebuilt in 3–5 days. A finished basement can take 3–6 weeks.

What can speed it up

  • Call within the first 24 hours — late mitigation adds days to drying time and may add mold remediation.
  • Choose a single company that does both mitigation and reconstruction.
  • File your insurance claim immediately.
  • Make decisions on materials/finishes fast.
